Established in 1994, the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) in Lakhimpur, Assam, works to enhance elementary education through teacher training, curriculum development, and pedagogical support.

DIET Lakhimpur organizes training programs, workshops, and research to help teachers adopt modern methods. It supports key initiatives like NIPUN Assam (foundational literacy), NISHTHA (teacher training), ECCE (Early Childhood Care and Education), Vocational Education, Value Education, and 21st Century Skills such as critical thinking, creativity, and digital literacy.

In addition, DIET Lakhimpur is actively involved in community outreach, promoting education awareness and local development through programs and engagement with local communities.

The institute also participates in SEAS (State Education and Administrative Services), LEP (Learning Enhancement Program), and national assessments like ASER (Annual Status of Education Report) and NAS (National Achievement Survey).

Role and Functions of DIET, Lakhimpur

  • DIET plays an important role as a district level academic nodal institution to conduct both pre-service and in-service training of the teachers.

  • A need based training both for short term and long term is conducted in the DIET and it supports to the teachers in professional and leadership development.

  • As a district level institution it provides scope for the teachers, teacher educators and the teacher trainees to undertake action research.

  • The main function of DIET is to train and orient the teachers and to make them aware of the new pedagogy and innovations.

  • Pre-service and in-service teacher education is the main function of DIET.

  • Academic and resource support to the teachers.

  • Organize training prog for continuous professional development of the teachers.

  • Curriculum and material development and extension activities.

  • Evaluation and monitoring of the quality education of the schools.
